Rice is the basic food in the Pego diet, most meals have this ingredient.

The Crosta

One of the most characteristic meals is La Crosta which consists in putting baked rice, once it is made, beaten eggs leaving it in the oven until it is converted into a golden crust.

The basic ingredients are:

  • Rice.
  • Meat (small pieces of lean, pork ribbon, chicken and magret).
  • Botifarra.
  • Chickpeas.
  • Eggs.

There are several containers to make the crust but the most used are the test casserole or baked pot.

Scalloped cakes

It is possible to say that another characteristic dish of Pego is that of the Escaldada Coques, this is a simple meal without any sophistication but with an extraordinary result.

Cakes are made with flour, hot water and salt (hence the name of scalded)

On top of it, different mixtures of ingredients are made, the most traditional combination is that of shrimp with tomato, but it is also the tradition of spinach and shrimp of river or tomato, tuna and egg.

There is a wide variety of Cakes in the Oven, but it is worth mentioning the most typical of Pego:

Coca with tomato and onion; the one of whites and tuna; the one of tomaca and red pepper; the one of peas and onion; the red sausage … and many more than surely you’ll like it.
